How to Add an Allowlist to Your Server
An allowlist (also known as permitted list) allows you to control who can join your Valheim server. Only players whose SteamID64 is added to the list will be able to connect.
Step 1: Get the Player's SteamID64
In order to add a player to the allowlist, you will first need to gather their SteamID64 number. This ID allows the game to identify each player when they join the server.
Navigate to a SteamID website, such as steamid.io (opens in a new tab).
Enter the username or Steam URL of the player's account, then locate and copy the SteamID64 number for later use.

Step 2: Edit the Permitted List File
Head to your Game Panel and access your Valheim server. To the left of the panel, click on File Manager.
Navigate to the /.config/unity3d/IronGate/Valheim folder.
Locate and click on the permittedlist.txt file. If the file doesn't exist, you can create it.

Step 3: Add Players to the Allowlist
Add the player's SteamID64 to the file. Important: Add only one ID per line, otherwise it will not work properly.

Click Save and restart the server for the changes to take effect!
What Happens When Allowlist is Active?
Once the allowlist is enabled and your server is restarted:
- โ Permitted players (those on the list) can join the server normally
- โ Non-permitted players will see a rejection message when trying to connect
When a player not on the list tries to join the server, they will see the following message in their game client:

Note: Make sure to add all trusted players to the permittedlist.txt file before enabling the allowlist, or they won't be able to join your server.
โ That's it! Your Valheim server now has an active allowlist to control who can join. If you have any problems, contact us via Discord (opens in a new tab) so we can help you.
